German border to Berlin

German border to Berlin: 14 Feb - 2 Mar

Into west Germany, for a trudge through Lower Saxony: visiting Nordhorn, Beesten, Essenerberg and a hilly stint just north of Osnabruk to Steinberger before reaching the provincial capital of Hanover. Here we’ll take the ‘red thread’ walking route and try to get under the skin of this strategically important, finely-balanced city: with its oil and coal and automotive industry links, scores of parks and forests, and Green Party mayor and city council. No dawdling, though: it’s an 8 day hike still till we reach Berlin, through North-Rhine Westphalia via Berkum, Schulenrode, Beendorf and Voldorf, Grebs and Lehnin. We edge past Potsdam and into Berlin: cities central to postwar peace and the end of the Cold War. Could Germany usher in similarly seismic changes in this century’s most epochal climate fight? Join us as we try to find out.
